How to Install a Solar Attic Fan
Seven steps. Reference for every roof-mount and gable-mount install in our line.
Intake ventilation comes first.
Without 480 sq in of Net Free Air per fan, the install will not perform. Use the soffit calculator to size intake before pulling out the saw.

- 1
Verify the attic is ready
Confirm at least 480 sq in of soffit Net Free Air per fan you plan to install. If intake is insufficient, add intake vents BEFORE installing the fan.
- 2
Pick the install location
Roof-mount goes near the ridge for best convection. Gable-mount goes in the gable end as high as possible. Keep at least 3 ft of clear roof on all sides for the solar panel.
- 3
Cut the rough opening
Mark and cut a clean opening per the variant template. 19x19 for the 30W roof, 18x18 for the 25W roof, 27.5x29 for the 70W. Always check for joists and wiring before cutting.
- 4
Set the fan
Lower the fan into the opening. The flashing collar should sit flat against the roof deck. Verify orientation: solar panel facing south or west for maximum sun exposure.
- 5
Seal with Premium Solar Sealant
Apply our Premium Solar Sealant generously around the flashing perimeter and at every fastener head. Our sealant is the only 100% warranty-approved option.
- 6
Reroof over the flashing
Lap shingles over the upper flashing edge per standard roofing practice. The lower edge stays exposed for water shedding.
- 7
Test
On a sunny day, confirm the fan is spinning. Verify airflow at the soffit vents. Take photos for the warranty registration and homeowner record.
After install
- ●Register the homeowner's warranty at our warranty registration page.
- ●Consider adding the DraftMaster attic stairway insulator and ComfortShield MLI to the same job.
